Hydro Herbal Shisha Reviews

Recommended Posts

Brand/Flavor:

Hydro "Blue Viper" (Blueberry)

Methodology:

-Approximately 20 hits/person across 20 minutes

-3 individuals in the circle

-40mm Golden coal, center holes

-Ophelia (See previous review for clarification)

-Vase filled with cold water

First Impressions:

Very stylish box, shiny black and blue design. Very silly engrish on the back of the box. Zip lock pouch with the herbal shisha inside; again, zip lock bag is more or less useless. Shisha looks very fine and fibrous, and is considerably drier to the touch than typical tobacco shisha. Not much excess molasses in the pouch when transferred to the jar.

Post Mortem:

Cooked completely through, almost no moisture residue whatsoever. It looks like dried grass.

Pros:

-Incredibly thick smoke

-Intense flavor, very sweet

-Barely any buzz/dizzyness/lightheadedness

-Not as messy

Cons:

- Barely any buzz/dizzyness/lightheadedness

- Slightly strange aftertaste, gone within a few seconds

Eric's Thoughts:

I'll be quite honest with you, I was expecting nothing from this pack of shisha. I've experimented with herbal shisha before and I've been seriously let down. So that said, Hydro blew me away. The smoke was incredibly thick, possibly thicker than the Romman Mint we reviewed yesterday. The flavor was intense and sweet, which was not what I was expecting from a shisha that was so dry to the touch. From the perspective of a tobacco smoker, the lack of a buzz, while not unexpected, was something of a letdown. However if you are not interested in having any nicotine in your system, Hydro Blue Viper is a solid buy. The flavor lasted for quite a while which again, surprised me considering how dry the shisha felt. The lack of buzz and thickness of smoke makes this brand/flavor ideal for practicing smoke rings without risking getting too lightheaded to walk.

Andrew's Thoughts:

Berry-flavored grass. Also, spectacular smoke, at least on the first few hits. I honestly can't recall seeing that much smoke coming off a hit, herbal or otherwise. The aftertaste was quite odd, especially at first, but I got used to it quickly, although I never really stopped noticing it. Overall, a solid smoke, especially if you're looking to stay nicotine-free, but don't expect a buzz.

Peanut Gallery:

(Caroline) If you're looking for something intense and incredibly sweet, this is a good choice--it quite literally tastes like candy. And the thick smoke was fun as well.

Conclusion:

A great blueberry, recommended regardless of whether you usually smoke herbal or not. If you want to stay nicotine-free, this is definitely recommended. If you're just looking for something flavorful and different, this is still a great buy ($4/50g).

Brand/Flavor:

Hydro Black Widow (Blackberry)

Methodology:

-20 hits/person over 35 minutes

-4 individuals in the circle

-3 half used up CoCo Naras on standard Mya bowl

-3 hose Mya Staff filled with cold water with a small Heba diffuser

First Impressions:

The cut on Hydro is very fine, like grass clippings or even wood splinters soaked in syrup. The smell is pretty fruity and definitely a berry smell, but not quite blackberry.

Post Mortem:

Mostly blackened and almost completely dry, but it's hard to tell what this means given how dry this stuff started out.

Pros:

-Thick smoke by any standard

-No buzz

Cons:

-Flavor misses the mark

-That "hydro" aftertaste is kinda strong

-No buzz

Andrew's Thoughts:

Coming off our experience with Blue Viper, I had fairly specific expectations for this shisha: I was going to get thick, beautiful clouds, tasting strongly of sweet blackberry with just a hint of the "herbalness" that seems to be inherent to sugar cane-based smokeables. Unfortunately, this is not what I experienced when smoking Hydro Black Widow. Though I did get the familiar giant clouds, the flavor itself was overwhelmed by the grassy flavor of the Hydro base, with only a generic berry sweetness managing to come through. And while this bowl was nigh immortal (when we finally stopped it was due to the coals and our preferences rather than any limit imposed by the shisha), we simply had no desire to keep smoking. While I wouldn't go as far as calling this stuff disgusting, it certainly wasn't an experiment I'm itching to repeat.

Eric's Thoughts:

Every single time I smoke hydro, I'm impressed by the size and density of the clouds, so much so that I tend to forget that I'm smoking an herbal, which makes it just that much more amazing. Unfortunately, that is where the praises for this flavor stop. Now I don't quite know what a blackberry tastes like. I thought they were the same thing as black raspberries, maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. But despite my ignorance in the matter, I can say one thing definitively, this shisha did not taste like berry of any kind. I mean I would get slight hints of it here and there, but never once during the session did I say "This is definitely berry". Rather, the shisha tasted a generic sweet flavor and nothing else, like a sugary syrupy flavor, rather than a sweet berry flavor. And of course, the typical hydro wood-ish flavor was there again, and stronger this time too. Beyond that, the most frustrating thing was that the smoke smelled of berries, it just didn't taste that way. Bottom line is Hydro continues to deliver consistently good smoke, but the flavor was off by enough to make me say look at different flavors.

Peanut Gallery:

(Caroline)

Hydro seems to exclusively use flavors better suited for children’s chewable Tylenol. They are always ridiculously sweet and remind me of all the times I had a headache as a child.

The Blackberry was not an interesting flavor—it was mostly just sweet, and what little flavor there was closely resembled that of the Blue Viper. It did produce a decent amount of smoke (as Hydro usually does), but for me at least, that is not enough to completely redeem it. This is not a flavor I would willingly smoke again.

Conclusion:

While it certainly won't kill you, Hydro Black Widow leaves our desks without recommendation. Your more tolerant friends might appreciate it, but we doubt you will.

C+

She is in a bunch of our reviews, but this was the one time she really decided to speak up. I guess she thought Andrew and I were too generous...oh well...

Hydro - Strawberry (Red Lightning)

Hookah: 32" KM Guru

Bowl: Phortex (It's now a Vortex that's been converted into a Phunnel)

Screen/Foil: Reynolds Wrap HD

Hose: KM Leather Hose

Coals: Exotica Natural Square Fingers (2/3 of a finger, broke into two pieces)

Base Liquid: Chilled Water

Appearance: Dark red, masses of grasses (or dog hair) :P

Smell: Strawberry flavored medicine

Taste: Strawberry cough syrup

Smoke: Smooth heavy clouds

Buzz: None

Duration: 55 minutes (left this weird taste in my mouth for about 25 minutes afterward that only a Terrapin Brewery Coffee Oatmeal Beer could wash away)

Overall: Has that medicinal strawberry taste everybody loves ;) Great for people that want to think they can smoke hookah without any ill effects or for pansy little sassies.

I give it a C overall and a B+ for herbal shisha.

I had the opportunity to try Hydro Herbal. i tried flavors like Tropical storm (mango), Black widow (blackberry), Aurora (pineapple), and Razmatazz (raspberry). THe flavor is dead on, the smoke is robust. Keep in mind this is a herbal shisha that is tobacco free you CAN NOT comapre it to tobacco brands its jsut not the same! Ive tried Black label/ Evolution (taste like wood), Soex (no taste), Salaam (chemical taste) and by far this exceeds all of them! THis brand even smokes better than alot of tobacco brands out there i will definetly be enjoying this product more often you should try it!
